ootd: crushed velvet

Hey!

I just wanted to post a comfy outfit of the day I wore recently. The weather has been back and forth between cold and hot...I wish the seasons would make up their minds already!

I wore this on a day that wasn't too chilly, but long sleeves were needed. The velvet is super soft and doesn't keep you as warm as you'd imagine! I've been eyeing the velvet trend for a while now, but I wasn't quite sure how to wear it. This simple top was easy to match and made the outfit. Also, it is super affordable! It also comes in navy.

The jeans are another one of those great forever 21 finds. They are affordable, but also great quality. They are high waisted and stretchy. I had to size up!

I just have to talk about these adidas neos. The style has been pretty popular, and I wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. I was in a shoe store recently and tried these on just to see how they looked on me, and WOAH SO COMFORTABLE!!!! I had to buy them because they are that freaking comfy!! I've been wearing them a ton-they go with everything. I get that sneaker level comfort without looking like I'm going to the gym. It's a win!

I tried an inside out french braid for the first time, and I really loved it. It shows the different tones in my hair, and is easy to wear as messy/voluminous style rather than the traditional french braid which always looks so tight to my scalp.

Overall it's a simple and comfortable all day outfit, without wearing sweats. And that my friends, is something I can get on board with any day.

Have a great week!

a deal, some music, and a movie

Summer is just about here! I am so excited for some sun!! I have just a few things to post about.

1. As we all know, I love deals. Forever 21 is one of my favorite places to shop, because you can often find really great DEALSSSSS! A lot of girls like the tulle skirt thing. I don't know if it's because of Carrie Bradshaw or our inner ballerina princesses, but regardless, I see the CUTEST outfits on pinterest that involve tulle skirts. I don't think I would ever wear a pink one, but I think black is a much more wearable option while still letting you get your tutu on. Tulle skirts are WAY overpriced. Everywhere I have seen them...even Etsy...way too expensive for something you probably won't get a ton of wear out of. Luckily forever 21 has a black tulle skirt on the website right now for $25!!! YES!
Discount codes:
 20% off $100 with code SUMMER20
10% off $50 with code SUMMER10
10% off order total with 10GKLSE (I think you have to be signed up for their newsletter to use this...if it doesn't work, just register your email)

2.  I recently tried out Tidal for my free month trial, and I just cannot get into it. I know all the artists promote that one, but I don't think I'll ever be able to leave spotify. Sadly, Taylor Swift music is not on spotify :( But I love the app so much.
Recent songs I have been loving:
100x - Tegan & Sara (can't wait for new album!!)
Crazy Heart -  She is We
Sugar, You - Oh Honey
Pierre - Ryn Weaver
Human - Jon Bellion
Un Beso - Carla Morrison
Surrender - Natalie Taylor
Simple and Clean - Mree (cover of kingdom hearts song)
Basically - Tei Shi
Moon and Back - Alice Kristiansen
Running Out - Matoma
Secret - Angel Snow
Heartstrings - Jacob Lee

3. I have added a movie to my list of favorites: Can't Buy Me Love starring young Patrick Dempsey (mcdreamy from grey's anatomy). It is on Netflix right now, and if you haven't seen it...go watch! It is a sweet surviving high school/love story and the ending is adorable. I loved it and possibly have more of a crush on baby Dempsey than mcdreamy!

Style Deals!

Happy Saturday!

I went by a department store recently and had a look around. I couldn't believe how many things I saw in the clothing section that were extremely similar to items from more affordable stores. It is possible to achieve the same styles from name brands even when you are on a budget. I included three styles in the widget below for you to check out! The name brand items are on the top row, and the more affordable look-a-likes are on the bottom row. Let me know what you think!

2015

Wow, it's been a whole year since posting on this blog. I honestly can't believe how fast 2015 has flown by, I guess because I have been so preoccupied with the happenings of life. This year, so many things have changed and molded me into a new and different person. I finally feel like I can put it down in words.

As I've mentioned before, my birthday is in the first week of each year, so I get to associate each year with an age. 2015 was my 24th year on the planet.

This year started off with heartbreak and disappointment, followed by months of feeling so lost. My whole life, I have truly thought I had everything figured out. I had a plan-and dreams and goals that coincided with it perfectly. But in 2015, the floor fell out from under me, and I experienced the 20's confusion everyone talks about. I can't tell you how many times I wished I was little again, like the girl in the picture. Back when I had no idea life was anything more than what I imagined when playing 'house' or with my barbies.

I wandered for what felt like an eternity. I kept reaching out in the dark, blindly grasping for any kind of solution. I desperately wanted a simple answer for all of life's questions, as if that exists...

At 24, I came to a crossroads. I could continue pursuing a path in which every door (and window) kept closing. I could sulk and pout in misery. I could trust that God had a plan for me, get out of bed and go find out what that plan is.

I wish I could say I recovered myself, but my parents had to practically pick me up, put me on my feet and dust me off.

A few weeks later, I landed a great job-full of learning opportunities. A few weeks after that, a new plan fell into my lap.

As 2015 comes to a close, I find it so interesting how it went from a year that I wished I could just delete from my life, to one I actually appreciate-one I am...dare I say....grateful for!

Life is crazy. It's cliche but, boy, is it the TRUTH. I am learning every day to let go of my plans and be open to a life greater than I could ever dream-God's story for my life.

I don't have everything figured out, and probably never will.

But I feel like things can only keep getting better from here.

2016, I am ready for you with a smile on my face.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message Version)
Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.

Dailylook LBD for NYE

Beautysets - Sparkle All Night Long! || NYE LBD

DailyLook asked me to style one of their little black dresses for New Years Eve, and here is my Style Set! I chose this adorable lace dress by BB Dakota-which is 40% off right now btw! I love the lace-only look at the top of the dress, and the back is also open. It is GORGEOUS!!

New Years Eve is all about the sparkle, so why wear a LBD? Everybody looks good in a black dress! Just add some fun accessories to bring the bling to the outfit. Other benefit-you can utilize a great black dress all year round. You can dress them up or down and wear them to many more occasions than a solid sequin alternative :)

The big stud earrings, bow bracelet, and envelope purse are all from Kate Spade. The bag is the perfect size for your essentials, and I prefer it to a clutch because you need both hands free-for champagne and sparklers, of course! The sparkle heels are by Steve Madden.

Since NYE is after Christmas, I decided to ditch the classic red lip and go for Party Line by MAC. It's a maroony/marsala color. I think a messy side bun or top knot would be perfect to show off the earrings and the back of this dress!

What do you think? What are you wearing for New Years Eve? Make a styleset of your own and share it with me!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :)

wednesday

Hi! Today is Wednesday!

I like Wednesdays this semester because I don't have class until 1pm, so I get to wake up without an alarm screaming, sip my coffee, and watch the Today Show. Ahhhhhhh so nice!!!

I haven't written since school started this semester, and I probably shouldn't be writing now....MUST STUDY EVERY MINUTE! But, I really wanted to share what I have been doing because it's just incredibly cool.

For anyone that doesn't know, I am currently in my last semester of graduate school for medical sciences. This means that after December I shall be known as Shelby, B.S., M.S., and yes, you need to refer to me by that name at all times henceforth. Haha kidding! I am very happy to be accomplishing this step in my education, but even more excited to move on to the next step in making my dreams come true (and adding more initials to my name).

ANYWAYS-my graduate program is very unique in that I have been given the opportunity to take medical school courses as part of my coursework. I chose Histology, Neuroanatomy, and Gross Anatomy. I conquered the first two, and am currently attacking Gross.

In case you don't know, Gross Anatomy is a course in which students learn detailed human anatomy in the classroom and also through lab dissection.  This course is truly incredible. I have to admit, I was extremely nervous on the first day, for obvious reasons. I wasn't sure what to expect or how I would feel in the lab, but now I can describe it perfectly: life changing.

The course has really tied together my education.  Everything I have learned over the past 5 years has really started to come together on a whole new level, because I actually get to see it in real life.  You truly cannot fully grasp the physiology until you know the anatomy, and pictures in a textbook just don't compare. I now have a strong appreciation for the people who are so gracious to donate their bodies to benefit science. Their gift enriches the education of future doctors, dentists, and physical therapists.  I never understood it until now, and I am just blown away.

The human body is a miraculous thing. We go through our day to day lives and most of us don't even have a thought about how amazing it is that we can function. Every day I learn something new that just adds to the complexity of it all.  I try to wrap my mind around the billions of processes my body does for survival beneath my level of consciousness. All by itself. Then I try to grasp the concept that this machine is not only capable of survival, but also emotions and desires to learn, to love, to explore, to grow.  I can't even handle it! WE ARE SO AMAZING!

The picture above demonstrates the vasculature of the heart. Did you know that in 1mm sq. of the heart there are 4,000 blood vessels? FOUR THOUSAND.

I really like science. Happy wednesday :)

The best summer yet!

Summer has officially ended, and I have to say that it was a memorable one! After several summer courses (straight A's OH YEAH!), I was lucky enough to travel to some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.  My family adventured to Italy, France, and England, and I must say, the cultures each had unique features that made for a very interesting experience. I learned a ton, tasted some amazing foods, and was often left in complete awe of the scenery and architecture. I decided to post some of my favorite photos from the trip!

My sister edited this photo for me (she's a professional)! This was taken at Caesar Augustus hotel on the Isle of Capri, Italy. It had breathtaking views and a garden where they picked all their fruits and vegetables and served them fresh daily.
This is Bruschetta. Tomatoes, onions, garlic, and basil on toast...my main staple in Italy. So fresh and unbelievably tasty.
Addie and I on the Amalfi coast in Sorrento, Italy. The mountain you see across the water is actually a volcano (Mt. Vesuvius).
This is a view of Amalfi, Italy from the pier.
The eiffel tower! It was much bigger than I expected for some reason and so beautiful at night with all the sparkling lights. Paris was probably my favorite stop on our trip, and I hope I can return someday and spend more time in the museums!

This summer was full of unforgettable experiences! Although the rest of the world can be amazing to travel, it always feels SO good to come back home.

It's time to put this summer in the books and move on to new challenges in school and life.  It's finally time for crisp Autumn air and all the best things about my favorite season! I feel so blessed, refreshed, and ready to take on my last semester of graduate school. Life is good.
